Film Room: An examination of Quinton Byfield's progress with the AHL's Ontario Reign

As much of the Quinton Byfield discourse going in the 2020 NHL Draft was centred on which city would play host to his NHL career as it was where he would take his talents for the 2020-21 season.

The CHL-NHL Agreement prohibits players like Byfield from playing in the AHL. The 1.82 points per game-scorer wasn't quite ready for the NHL, but there’s some reasonable argument to be made that the OHL wouldn’t be the best place for him to develop either.

With the OHL pause before the league ultimately forfeit the season, Byfield found himself in the best place to continue his development, the AHL’s Ontario Reign. The 18-year-old co-leads Ontario in scoring with 20 points in 29 games, and his progression from January to now has been significant.
