There’s a different mandate in Detroit than in year’s past. The playoff streak is gone. So is the legendary Ken Holland. Even the rink is relatively new. Everything but the logo itself is in the midst of a renovation.
Now the newly-minted general manager Steve Yzerman has to find a way to create the next playoff streak. Better still, another Stanley Cup to add to the mantle — if there’s even any room left.
It’s been three years since the Red Wings last graced our televisions in late-April. Hell, it might be another three seasons before they’re back. The cost of a proper rebuild is measured in patience. Michigan is having theirs tested.
There’s a foundation in place. Holland started restocking the cupboards before Edmonton came calling, and did an admirable job at that.
