So continues a now three-year trend of the Nashville Predators improving their prospect pool's stock by five or more spots in the EP Rinkside annual rankings, as they go from the 16th-best pool the last off-season to the top-10 of this year's countdown.

We can attribute this phenomenon to two factors. The first is that this team is nominally going through something resembling a rebuild; at the very least, their on-ice quality has been in steady decline in the last few seasons, and their position in each draft has risen accordingly. The second is that their scouts have extracted surplus value from an inordinately large number of their picks, high in the draft or otherwise.

The sum total of that work leaves the Predators with a system that's rich at every position, particularly the premium ones like in-goal, down the middle, and to a lesser degree, on the blue line. For a team that seems reluctant to pull the chute with a firesale of their ageing assets, that groundswell of blue-chip prospects is going to be critical to reopening their window as a credible contender.
