What We Learned: Capitals prepping for interesting offseason

During All-Star weekend, few in the league seemed interested in actually working. A couple GMs made signings and trades. But none were as busy as Capitals GM Brian MacLellan.

He signed two lengthy contracts for current players in quick succession, giving Dylan Strome five years with a $5-million AAV, and Sonny Milano three years at a $1.9-million AAV. These are both players he acquired this past offseason, and it seems things are going well with them. Strome is fourth on the Capitals in goals, third in points, with positive offensive impacts and solid underlying numbers. He's probably worth this contract, more or less. Milano's actually could end up being a bargain, because while he's not as productive, he is still a versatile, useful player who could go 20-20–40 even in a depth role.
