New York Rangers hire Peter Laviolette as new head coach

NHL

Peter Laviolette is the new coach of the New York Rangers.

Laviolette is the 37th coach in franchise history and fills the void that was created after Gerard Gallant parted with the team after a first-round loss to the New Jersey devils.

Laviolette was fired by the Capitals in mid-April after failing to qualify for the playoffs for the first time in his three-year tenure with that organization.

Laviolette won the Stanley Cup as the head coach of the Carolina Hurricanes in 2006, but will now be coaching his sixth NHL team. He will also be the first person to ever serve as the head coach of both the New York Islanders and Rangers in his career.
