Making sense of the St. Louis Blues' offer sheets to Philip Broberg and Dylan Holloway

The St. Louis Blues caught the entire hockey world off guard yesterday, when they signed Edmonton Oilers restricted free agents Dylan Holloway and Philip Broberg to a pair of two-year offer sheets.

Already deep into their offseason, the Oilers probably had other priorities to attend to, like planning how to structure contract extensions for Evan Bouchard and Leon Draisaitl. This left Broberg and Holloway on the backburner, vulnerable to such a proposition as this.

Now, there's a heightened sense of urgency. The Oilers and their newly minted general manager Stan Bowman have six days to decide if they can – or more to the point, want – to pay the $2.29 million it would take to keep Holloway around and/or the $4.58 million for Broberg, each for the next two seasons.
