Larkin signing, followed by Yzerman selling a sobering reminder of where Detroit sits in the East

DETROIT, Michigan – Dylan Larkin committed to the Yzerplan this week. 

On Wednesday, he inked an eight-year extension worth $8.7 million per season, signing the deal in his kitchen with Steve Yzerman

For the lifelong Michigan resident, it was a commitment on both sides to a franchise he grew up rooting for. 

It’s supposed to be an ecstatic, exciting moment. Even with Detroit having lost back-to-back games against the Ottawa Senators this week, the Red Wings and Larkin felt they were on the right track to potentially make the playoffs this season. 

Then Yzerman picked up the phone and traded Filip Hronek to the Vancouver Canucks for a pair of picks on Wednesday afternoon. On Thursday morning he traded Tyler Bertuzzi to the first-place Boston Bruins for a first and a fourth-rounder.
