NCAA Tournament Takes Day 4: Minnesota rolls, Michigan squeaks by en route to Frozen Four

A brief recap of today’s NCAA tournament games:

No. 6 Minnesota Golden Gophers 3, No. 3 Western Michigan Broncos 0 (Worcester regional)

This was the Gophers playing against type.

Over their last two games, they allowed seven goals and the defence felt leaky. They entered Sunday’s game with the 14th-best team defence in the nation, despite allowing just under 27 shots on goal per game. It felt like the Broncos, boasting the fourth-most goals scored nationally thanks to 11 different players with at least eight goals, had the weapons to at least put a scare into this defensive unit.

But it didn’t work out that way. At all.

For the Gophers, the shot suppression was there, and that probing WMU offence was nowhere to be found, shuttered by a commitment to team defence that only allowed a small handfu
