Trey Augustine out to prove he can make it as shorter goalie

PLYMOUTH, Michigan – The average NHL goalie is now 6-foot-3. 

The four starting goalies of the teams that reached the NHL’s final four checked in at 6-foot-5, 6-foot-6, 6-foot-2, and 6-foot-4. 

It’s become a position of giants, those below 6-foot-2 typically need not apply. 

That’s one of the challenges Trey Augustine faces heading into the 2023 NHL Draft this week in Nashville and as he embarks on a college career next season at Michigan State. 

He’s 6-foot-1, even though goalies like Juuse Saros have opened up some general manager minds, in general Augustine’s height becomes a concern for teams, even after he had solid showing for the United States Development Program this season.
